Mental Health Awareness Training through the Rural AHEC Scholars Program

As part of our Rural AHEC Scholars and Healthcare Champions programs, eight healthcare professions students will be taking a mental health awareness/assessment training through the Wyoming County Mental Health Department. To benefit both the students and local communities, the Scholars will then collaborate with a community educator to offer a mental health awareness presentation/training session. One of our goals is to help support local youth leaders by bringing them together to offer this learning opportunity.

Our Scholars are students from SUNY Geneseo’s Sociomedical Sciences, SUNY Fredonia’s Biology/PreMed, and RIT’s Physician Assistant program. They will be working with Jenelle VonBuren, the Community Educator from Wyoming Co Mental Health, to develop the mental health training event. The presentation will focus on the following topics:

  • Depression and mood disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Trauma
  • Substance Abuse
  • Resiliency and Recovery – the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can and do get better, and use their strengths to stay well

The event will take place at 6:30pm on Thursday, July 26th, and will last approximately an hour. Family Life Church on Route 19 in Warsaw has graciously offered their worship center as the event venue.
